The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
