The Global Health Body Sounds Concern Over Severe Scarcity of Obesity Jabs
Less than 10% of patients eligible to benefit from GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy can access them, warns the World Health Organization as it issues its inaugural advice on the drugs.
Given over a billion people worldwide currently classified as obese, it is advocating for increased and just availability to this class of drugs.
According to forecasts, over two billion could be obese by 2030 without intervention.
"The new guidelines acknowledges that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with thorough and lifelong treatment," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
High costs, constrained manufacturing, and supply-chain constraints are major obstacles to universal access to the treatments that can assist patients in reducing considerable body mass, says the agency.
Skinny Jab Supply Crisis
Despite the current most optimistic outlook, the supply of GLP-1 therapies could only cover approximately 100 million people – under 10% of those who need them, as stated by the health organization.
The recommendation urges nations and manufacturers to widen access, via strategies including patent sharing.
Exclusive production rights on a key compound – the main ingredient of a leading brand – is due to expire in a number of countries in 2026.
How Obesity Drugs Function
These medications imitate a body's own hormone to reduce digestion speed, suppress the appetite and increase satiety so people eat less.
Patients usually start to lose weight within a few weeks of beginning the regular doses.
Research points to users may put most of the weight back on a year later of discontinuing the medication, when their typical hunger return.
To be above a healthy weight increases your risk for experiencing health problems, like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and specific cancers.
Obesity affects people in every country and was responsible for over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the health agency.
